What is the AM2 & AM2S

Who is the AM2/S for?

The AM2S should be taken by Electrotechnical Apprentices who are training against the Apprenticeship Framework and the AM2 for those who are undertaking the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment. The difference between AM2 & AM2S  Section  A1, B, C, D and E are the same time limits for both AM2  assessments. However, the time limit changes for the Composite  Installation (Section A), as shown below. The extra time allowed for the  AM2-S for the installation of a small section of Steel  Conduit and PVC Conduit.

By  passing AM2(S) assessment, you will demonstrate that you have a level  of competence expected by the industry in the following key occupational  areas:

  • The interpretation of specifications, drawings and diagrams,
  • Risk assessments and also Health and Safety,
  • Safe isolation,
  • Planning and preparing to install, terminate and connect identified wiring systems,
  • Inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations,
  • Fault diagnosis and fault correction,

The  understanding and application of industry recognised procedures,  working practices and the requirements of statutory and non-statutory  regulations.

During the assessment, you will be working on:

  • Lighting and power circuits,
  • A three-phase distribution board and sub-circuit,
  • A central heating/sustainable energy system,
  • A safety services circuit and device,
  • A data cabling system.

What is AM2?

The  Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2) assessment, administered by London & Essex Electrical Training Ltd on behalf of National Electrotechnical Training (NET) Organisation  in conjunction with the Joint Industry Board (JIB), is the  electrotechnical industry standard assessment for electrical competence.  Forming an essential part of the Electrical Advanced Apprenticeship,  the purpose is to ensure all qualified electricians achieve a single  standard that has been agreed by employers as meeting their needs from  qualified personnel. AM2 provides an  independent, reliable and trusted measure of safe, high quality  workmanship for the electrotechnical industry and is highly valued by  employers, who regard it as evidence of competence for an electrician,  also forming part of the evidence required to apply for the ECS `Gold  Card`.

What does the AM2 assessment consist of?

The  AM2 is a practical assessment with a short online exam, comprised of  five timed sections over a total of 16.5 hours. The assessment requires  the candidate to perform a series of common occupational procedures  including installation, fault-finding, inspection and testing.

  • Section A1 - Safe Isolation & Risk Assessment - 45 mins
  • Section A - Composite installation - 8 h 30 min (AM2S - 10 hours)
  • Section B - Inspection, Testing and Certification - 3 h 30 min
  • Section C - Safe Isolation (second isolation on 3 specific scenarios)- 30 mins
  • Section D - Fault Diagnosis & Rectification - 2 hours
  • Section E - On-line exam - 1 hour
